1. Community Rules
Don't post, send, or do any of the following anywhere in Till Then — in a memory, a caption, a chat, a name, a capsule name, or a profile:
- Anything sexual involving anyone under 18, ever — including "jokes", drawings, or AI-generated images. We remove it, preserve it as the law requires, report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), and ban the account.
- Intimate images of anyone without their consent — including real or AI-made nude or sexual images, and threats to share them ("sextortion").
- Nudity or sexual content of any kind. Till Then is used by teenagers.
- Bullying, harassment, humiliation, or threats — including ganging up on someone in a group capsule or chat.
- Hate or slurs targeting people for their race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or serious illness.
- Violence, or content that promotes, glorifies or encourages self-harm, suicide or eating disorders.
- Selling or promoting drugs, weapons, or anything illegal; scams, spam or fake giveaways.
- Pretending to be someone else — including Till Then or its staff — or using a name, username or profile meant to mislead.
- Filming or photographing people where they'd expect privacy (bathrooms, changing rooms) or people who clearly didn't agree to be recorded.
- Sharing someone's private information (address, phone number, passwords) without their permission.
- Breaking the app: hacking, scraping, automating accounts, getting around a block or a ban, or getting around the time lock.
Names have extra rules, because people who aren't your friends can see them: usernames and display names can't include swear words, slurs, sexual terms, links, emails, @handles, phone numbers, fake check marks, or anything that looks like Till Then. Usernames can be changed once every 30 days, and an old username is held for a while so nobody can grab it to pass as you.
We check text automatically for slurs and sexual terms and won't post a message, caption or name that contains them. Ordinary swearing between friends in a chat is fine; it isn't in a name.
2. Reporting, and how we act
- In the app: tap ⋯ on a memory, press and hold a chat message, or open someone's profile, and choose Report. You can also Block anyone: they can't find you, add you, message you or invite you. Reports are anonymous — the person reported is never told who reported them.
- We review every report within 24 hours, and act on urgent ones (a child at risk, an intimate image, threats of violence or self-harm) first. If something breaks these rules we remove it — even from a capsule that's still locked — and we may ban the account, permanently. Banned accounts are signed out everywhere and their usernames are never released.
- Intimate images (Take It Down): if an intimate image of you — or of your child — is on Till Then without consent, anyone can ask us to remove it, without an account, using our safety and removal form. We remove valid requests and known identical copies within 48 hours.
- Child safety: we report apparent child sexual exploitation to NCMEC as US law requires, and keep the evidence for the time the law requires. If a child is in immediate danger, call 911. You can also report to NCMEC directly at report.cybertip.org.
- Self-harm: if you or a friend are thinking about suicide or self-harm, call or text 988 (US) any time.
- Law enforcement requests go through the safety form. We respond to valid legal process and, in emergencies involving danger of death or serious injury, may share information without it.
3. Who can use Till Then
- You must be at least 13 years old. We ask for your birthday when you sign up; if you're under 13 you can't make an account, and if we learn someone under 13 has one we delete it.
- If you're under 18 (or the age of majority where you live), you need a parent or guardian's permission to use Till Then and to agree to these terms, and they should read them with you. Accounts for people under 18 start with extra protections: no notifications late at night, school and class year shown only to friends, and only findable by someone who types your exact username.
- You can't use Till Then if we've banned you before, or if the law where you live doesn't allow you to.
4. Your account
- Give accurate information, keep your password to yourself, and tell us through the safety form if you think someone else got into your account. You're responsible for what happens on your account.
- One person, one account. Don't sell, share or transfer accounts or usernames.
- We may reclaim or change a username that breaks these rules, impersonates someone, or infringes a trademark.
5. Your content
- You own what you capture and write. To run Till Then, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, copy, process, and show your content to the people you share it with (the members of a capsule, or the people in a chat), and to make the technical copies needed to do that (for example, resizing a video). We don't use it for anything else — no ads, no selling it, no showing it to strangers, no training AI on it. The license ends when your content is deleted, except for copies we must keep for legal reasons or that remain in backups for a short time.
- You promise that you have the right to share what you share, that the people in it are OK with being in it, and that it doesn't break these rules or the law.
- Memories are captured live in the app, so what's in a capsule is what really happened. Don't use tricks to get around that.
- Copyright: if you believe something on Till Then infringes your copyright, send a notice through the safety form with: your contact details, the work, where the infringing material is, a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't authorised, a statement that your notice is accurate and that you're the owner or authorised to act for them, and your signature. We remove infringing material and ban repeat infringers.
6. How capsules work
- A capsule stays locked until its reveal date. Before then, nobody can see what's inside — not even the person who made it.
- You can take back a memory for 24 hours after you add it (or until the capsule opens, if that's sooner). After that it's locked in — that's the point of the app. The only exceptions are a moderator removing something that breaks these rules, and deleting your account (section 7).
- A group can vote to change its reveal date or open early, and can vote in its chat to start a new capsule. A capsule's chat stays open for the number of days the group chose after it opens, then closes.
- Once a capsule opens, everyone in it can see and save what's inside. We can't control what people do with things they've saved, so only share what you're comfortable with your capsule seeing forever.
- Till Then is new. We work hard to keep your memories safe, but we can't promise the service will never be interrupted or that nothing will ever be lost. Save what matters to you once a capsule opens.
7. Ending your account
- You can delete your account any time: You → Account & security → Delete my account. This deletes your profile, your chats, and what you added to capsules — unless you choose to leave what you added to group capsules for your friends. See the Privacy Policy for details.
- We may suspend or end your account, or remove content, if you break these terms, if the law requires it, or to protect people on Till Then. Where it's safe and lawful, we'll tell you why. If you think we got it wrong, contact us through the safety form.
- We may change or stop Till Then. If we ever shut it down, we'll give you notice and a chance to save your opened capsules first.
8. Disclaimers and limits
Till Then is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't control, and aren't responsible for, what other people post or do.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Till Then will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of data, content or goodwill, arising from your use of Till Then; and our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of US $50 or what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim (Till Then is free, so usually $0 + $50). Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not apply to you; nothing here limits rights you have that can't be limited by contract.
If you break these terms or the law and someone makes a claim against us because of it, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it, as far as the law allows.
9. If you got Till Then from Apple's App Store
- These terms are between you and Till Then, not Apple. Apple isn't responsible for Till Then or its content.
- Your license to use the app is a limited, non-transferable license to use it on Apple devices you own or control, as allowed by the App Store's Usage Rules.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Till Then.
- If the app fails to meet any applicable warranty, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund any purchase price (Till Then is free); to the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation. Any other claims, losses or costs from a failure to meet a warranty are ours, not Apple's, to the extent these terms don't disclaim them.
- Apple isn't responsible for any claims about the app — including product liability, failure to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, or consumer protection claims — or for investigating, defending or settling a claim that the app infringes someone's intellectual property. Those are ours, to the extent these terms don't disclaim them.
- You confirm you aren't in a country under a US government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and aren't on a US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and once you accept them Apple can enforce them against you.
- Questions, complaints or claims about the app: contact us through the safety form.
10. The rest
- Changes: if we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before the change takes effect. Keeping on using Till Then after that means you accept the new terms.
- Law: these terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes go to the state or federal courts in California, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring them where you live.
- If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce something right away, we haven't given up the right to. You can't transfer these terms; we can, if Till Then changes hands, and we'll tell you.
- These terms, the Privacy Policy, and the in-app rules are the whole agreement between you and Till Then about the app.
